The lack of movement is really apparent if you compare Skyrim's combat with the Souls combat in 3rd person. A dodge/backstep button would also make a huge difference. If you added movement so that when you attack an enemy your character takes a quick step forward, and then on attacking the enemy is slightly knocked back and staggered, it would mean if you get the enemy's guard down you can dart in for a quick series of attacks and be rewarded. If we want proper combat in elder scrolls games, you need to be able to take advantage of an enemy being out of position, and as it stands right now it's simply far too slow to run in and attack an enemy. A light attack makes you slash and step forward at the same time. In Demons Souls for example, a heavy attack with a longsword causes your character to take a big lunge forward.

It should not be possible for me to walk up to an enemy and just button mash, attacking them as they attack me. They could simply shake the camera in a way not unlike the recoil of a gun in a first person shooter, where the player still has some control. Note this is not the same as going through some ridiculous knock down period. And if I get attacked as the player, I should be staggered and lose a bit of control. Look at the souls games, and look at how every time you attack an enemy they stagger - unless they're heavily armored and you are using a light weapon. There are several key problems with the combat.įirstly is the lack of feedback.
